Finding the right partners and places to ask questions is paramount to understanding the drivers of agricultural transformation. To facilitate opportunities for researchers and partners to develop trust and scope early-stage evaluation questions, DAISI funded small proposal development grants to support very preliminary, exploratory research activities, including researcher travel. This proposal development grant explored research themes related to information (livestock extension) and access to markets.
As part of this proposal development grant, the research team formed a partnership with the Osun State Ministry of Agriculture in Nigeria to explore an evaluation of the Osun Broilers Outgrowers Production Scheme (OBOPS). The OBOPS pilot livestock program integrates digital extension services, capital transfer, and market access for small-scale livestock producers in Osun State.
Proposal development activities included stakeholder engagement and key informant interviews with policymakers and livestock farmers, revealing limited extension capacity and low preferences for digital technologies among farmers. In future work, the research team is partnering with OBOPS to develop and evaluate extension tools for enrolled livestock farmers.
